Reviewed 2 October 2026. Term insurance is primarily protection against the financial consequences of death during a stated period. The benefits depend on the contract, disclosures and policy status. Compare the policy itself before relying on an advertised premium.
Read the benefit and exclusions
A basic term plan generally pays an agreed benefit for a covered death during the policy term and does not provide a survival payout. Variants and riders differ. Check exclusions, premium duration, benefit payment options, revival conditions and any return-of-premium feature in the actual wording.
IRDAI’s life insurance rules require a Customer Information Sheet with the policy. Use it to identify key terms, then read the full document rather than treating the summary as the entire contract.
Estimate the protection gap
Build a household needs estimate: outstanding liabilities + future essential goals + support required for dependants − resources genuinely available for those needs. Do not subtract assets your family must retain for housing or that cannot readily be used.
Illustration: ₹30 lakh liabilities, ₹20 lakh planned essential goals and ₹60 lakh estimated family support, less ₹10 lakh available resources, gives a ₹1 crore planning gap. This arithmetic is not a personalised cover recommendation. Inflation, future income, duration of support and existing insurance need separate assessment.
Compare written offers on the same basis
- Same cover, age, term and payment frequency.
- Same health, smoking and occupation disclosures.
- Premium payment term and any future changes.
- Exclusions, riders and claim documentation.
- Insurer service, grievance routes and policy terms.
A claim-settlement percentage alone does not show whether a particular policy suits you or how your claim would be handled. Compare the reporting period and metric before using industry statistics.
Complete disclosures carefully
Answer the proposal questions accurately, check the completed form and retain a copy. Do not let an intermediary leave important information out to obtain a cheaper quote. An indicative online premium may change after underwriting. Read the issued policy, review applicable cancellation rights and keep beneficiaries informed of where the documents are stored.
Review after major life changes
Marriage, a new dependant, a loan or a change in family income can alter the gap. Review existing protection before replacing it; cancelling one policy before another is issued can leave a period without cover. Tax treatment depends on eligibility and the applicable regime, so do not buy a policy solely for a presumed deduction.
