Your order is cancelled and the refund is visible, but the credit-card EMI is still active? Check the merchant refund, the card-account credit and the EMI facility separately. A cancelled shopping order does not, by itself, tell you which loan entries, fees or billed amounts the issuer has reversed.

Official issuer guidance checked on 19 October 2026. This guide concerns credit-card purchase EMIs; debit-card loans, cardless credit and buy-now-pay-later products can have different terms.

The first question for your bank

“Has the merchant refund been matched to this EMI facility, and what amount is currently payable on my card?” Obtain the applicable cancellation/closure treatment instead of assuming the shopping app’s status settled the card account.

Why can an EMI remain active after an order cancellation?

Start with evidence from the two providers. The merchant handles the cancelled purchase and its refund record. The card issuer maintains the EMI facility and card statement. You need to know whether the refund was only initiated, actually credited and then reconciled against the correct facility.

Separate the three stages before raising a ticket
RecordQuestion to answer
Merchant order/refundIs cancellation confirmed, and what amount/reference was refunded?
Card-account creditHas the refund actually posted to the original card?
EMI facility and statementIs the facility cancelled, preclosed, reduced or still active? Which entries remain payable?

An email saying “refund initiated” is not the same as a posted card credit. A posted credit is not, on its own, a closure confirmation for every issuer’s EMI product. Keep the original purchase date, conversion date, refund date and statement date in order.

HDFC, ICICI and Axis: why one cancellation rule does not fit every card

These are examples from the issuers’ published terms, not an instruction to apply one bank’s policy to another. Match your actual facility, transaction date and refund circumstances.

Issuer rules and checks

HDFC Bank EasyEMITerms distinguish refund-related closure and partial-refund treatment; processing fees are not reversed on cancellation/preclosure.

ICICI Bank Instant EMICancellation eligibility includes a customer-care request and specified refund/timing conditions.
Confirm: Eligibility, reference and the applicable cancellation/foreclosure charges.
Axis Bank merchant EMIIts merchant-refund section requires a cancellation request after a full refund and distinguishes partial refunds.
Confirm: Whether the refund qualifies for that process.

ICICI’s 15-day condition is not a universal cooling-off period

ICICI’s published Instant EMI terms, effective from 1 May 2025 for the cancellation section, require contacting customer care within 15 days of the transaction. The listed eligibility includes a full refund in a single transaction within that period, or a single partial refund within it where the difference is below ₹1,500. Its additional clauses also discuss foreclosure charges. Eligibility therefore does not mean every cancellation is free.

Ask the issuer to identify the provision applicable to your own EMI booking. Do not take this example as a 15-day rule for all banks, or as permission to ignore a current statement.

What happens after a partial refund or a split refund?

Tell the bank exactly how the merchant processed it. A single full refund, two separate credits, a partial return and a refund reduced by an offer adjustment are different facts. Add the references to your timeline rather than describing all of them as “full refund done.”

HDFC’s EasyEMI terms describe circumstances in which a partial refund reduces outstanding principal and remaining EMIs instead of closing the facility. Axis’s merchant-EMI cancellation section says merchant EMIs are not cancelled in the case of a partial refund. Check your own issuer’s treatment before assuming the monthly debit must disappear.

Illustration: An order contained two items but only one was returned. Before asking why the EMI remains, identify the retained item and the actual credit received. The fact that the refund is complete for the returned item does not mean the original whole order was refunded.

Will processing fees, interest and GST be refunded on a no-cost EMI?

Keep each line separate: product refund, EMI principal adjustments, billed interest, processing fee, tax and any offer reversal. “No-cost EMI” is not evidence that every one of those lines must become zero after cancellation.

HDFC’s EasyEMI page explains that a merchant discount/cashback can offset interest while the bank still charges interest. Its terms also say already-posted EMI interest is not reversed in the described refund-related preclosure scenario, and processing fees do not reverse on cancellation/preclosure. Read the applicable conditions instead of promising yourself a complete fee refund.

For how the original purchase cost is structured, see our separate no-cost EMI versus full-payment guide. This page focuses on the later refund and closure problem.

A simple statement example: product refund versus remaining fee

Illustrative statement checks
Example entryAmount and check
Original purchase₹60,000
Which transaction was converted?
Merchant product refund₹60,000 credit
Has it posted and been matched?
Assumed processing fee₹199
Was it reversed or retained?
Assumed tax on that fee₹35.82
What does the actual statement show?

In this imaginary example, the fee and tax total ₹234.82. A ₹60,000 product refund does not, just by matching the purchase price, answer whether those separate entries were reversed. This is not a formula for subtracting a refund from your entire statement: other purchases, repayments and loan adjustments can also be present.

Should I keep paying the billed EMI while the refund is being resolved?

Ask the issuer to confirm the current amount due, the effect of any posted credit and the payment deadline. ICICI’s Instant EMI terms require the month’s EMI to be paid by the statement due date and describe late-payment consequences. Do not stop a scheduled payment solely because the merchant confirmed a return. Keep written clarification of any adjustment.

Our minimum due versus total due guide explains why those two figures mean different things. It does not replace the issuer’s reconciliation of your refunded EMI.

What should I send to the merchant and bank?

  1. Merchant: request the cancelled-order record, actual refund amount, date, destination and refund reference/ARN if provided.
  2. Issuer: provide the original transaction and EMI references through its official private channel, then ask whether the refund has been matched.
  3. Closure and charges: ask for the facility status, any remaining principal or fee, and the applicable terms before accepting a foreclosure calculation.
  4. Statement: confirm the revised amount payable and due date, then keep the complaint and closure references.

A concise message is: “Purchase [reference] was converted into EMI [reference]. The merchant refunded [amount] on [date], and my card shows [credit/status]. Please confirm the EMI facility status, each fee/interest/tax adjustment, and the current amount payable by the due date.” Do not post card numbers, statements, CVV or OTPs in public comments.

Common refund and EMI questions

Will cancelling an Amazon or Flipkart order automatically cancel every bank’s EMI?

Use the issuer-specific checks above. The retailer’s cancellation screen alone is not proof that every loan and statement adjustment is complete.

Can I pay extra into the card to close the EMI myself?

HDFC’s EasyEMI terms say an extra payment into the card account does not itself close that facility. Obtain the applicable issuer process instead of assuming a surplus credit is a closure request.

Can the bank give a single guaranteed refund/closure deadline for everyone?

Match the actual product, refund type and eligibility first. Keep the bank’s reference and promised next update for your case; do not use a generic internet deadline as a substitute.
