Income-tax refund failed or not received? Start with the actual status of the filed return. A return still being processed, a refund already issued but not credited, and a failed refund need different follow-ups. The Refund Reissue service is for a failure of an issued refund; it is not a button to speed up every pending return.

Official Income Tax Department guidance checked on 19 October 2026. This guide explains status checks and the published reissue process; it does not determine your refund entitlement or promise a credit date.

Keep these three records separate

Your filed return and verification status → the department’s refund status → the bank account’s actual credit. A message about one stage does not prove that the next stage is complete.

How do I check my income-tax refund status?

The department’s Refund Status manual directs logged-in users to e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns. Select the relevant assessment year and open View Details to inspect the return’s life cycle. The manual also says refund processing starts after e-verification.

Use the year printed on your filed return rather than assuming that the newest year displayed is the correct one. Note the status wording and date before deciding what has gone wrong.

The official manual shows issued, partially adjusted, fully adjusted and failed refund states. An adjustment is not the same problem as a failed bank transfer. Read the corresponding communication before asking for the whole claimed amount to be sent again.

Why does bank-account validation matter for an ITR refund?

The My Bank Account FAQ says only a validated account can be nominated for a refund. Successful validation requires a valid PAN registered with e-Filing and an active bank account linked with that PAN.

Do not stop at “I entered my bank details.” Check the actual validation status and the account nominated for the refund. Compare the account’s masked number with your own bank record, especially if you added a new account or changed banks.

For example, a bank app showing your current savings account does not prove that an older account on the tax portal is active. Build a private comparison of the two records and correct the specific mismatch. This checklist helps you organise evidence; it does not identify the cause of every refund failure.

How to request an income-tax refund reissue after failure

The official Refund Reissue manual requires a filed return with a refund failure, a validated bank account and access to a supported verification method. Its published workflow is:

  1. Log in to the official e-Filing portal.
  2. Open Services → Refund Reissue.
  3. Choose Create Refund Reissue Request.
  4. Select the failed-refund record and continue.
  5. Select the validated account for the refund and proceed to verification.
  6. Complete the supported e-verification process and retain the resulting Transaction ID.

The manual says only validated bank-account details appear for selection; it provides an Add Bank Account route if another account is needed. It also provides View Refund Reissue Request for checking submitted requests.

Submission is not the final bank credit. Keep the transaction reference and check the request’s outcome. Do not describe a success acknowledgement as “refund received” until the money is actually reflected in the bank account.

Three examples: same complaint, different next step

A. Still processing

The taxpayer has a verified return, but no issued-refund failure. First inspect the processing record and communications.

B. Transfer failed

A failure is recorded. Check the bank issue and eligible reissue record rather than restarting the return.

C. Amount adjusted

The taxpayer expected a larger credit. First read the adjustment details and calculation, not just the bank balance.

These are illustrative situations, not customer case histories. The useful distinction is the missing evidence. In A it is the processing outcome; in B it is resolution of the failure and the reissue outcome; in C it is understanding the adjustment.

What should I keep ready if the refund is still unresolved?

A private follow-up worksheet
RecordWhy it helps
Assessment year and return acknowledgementIdentifies the correct return.
Verification and processing datesSeparates filing from later processing.
Exact refund or failure statusIdentifies the stage requiring follow-up.
Relevant intimationExplains an amount or adjustment.
Bank validation and nomination statusChecks the destination record.
Reissue Transaction ID, if submittedIdentifies the follow-up request.

The department’s grievance FAQ describes an official route for e-Filing and processing-related complaints, including CPC-ITR issues, with status checking. Choose the relevant issue and explain what remains unresolved. A grievance does not replace a required verification or a failed-refund reissue request.

A useful message is: “For assessment year [year], my return shows [exact status]. The relevant update was on [date]. Bank validation shows [status]. I submitted reissue request [reference, if any]. Please clarify the pending action or recorded reason.” Send identifiers and supporting records only through official private channels.

Income-tax refund questions readers ask

My ITR is e-verified. Does that mean the refund has been approved?

No. Verification and the processing/refund outcome are different stages. Check the return details and any intimation instead of treating the verification message as an approval.

Can I nominate more than one bank account for refund?

The official bank-account FAQ permits multiple validated accounts to be nominated. Still check the destination associated with the particular refund; do not infer it from the first account in your banking app.

Will a reissue request increase the refund amount?

Reissue addresses a failed issued refund. It does not amend the tax calculation. If you disagree with the amount or adjustment, read the intimation and get advice on the appropriate correction or response.

Should I file another return just to make the refund faster?

Do not confuse return correction with payment follow-up. Identify the actual status first. Our ITR filing guide covers the broader filing process; this page concerns the refund stage.

How many days will it take after my request?

This guide does not promise a universal credit deadline. Follow the recorded request status and official communications. A request acknowledgement and a bank credit are different pieces of evidence.
