750 CIBIL score but your personal loan was rejected? Yes, that can happen. A credit score describes part of your borrowing history; it does not establish your current income, affordable EMI or eligibility for a particular lender’s product. Even a score above 800 does not create a right to loan approval.

What should you do first? Ask the lender for the reason or reason category, read your full credit report, and compare the proposed EMI with your existing commitments. Do this before submitting applications to several more lenders. A rejection message alone cannot tell us which check failed.

Simple Hindi: “CIBIL achha hai” aur “naya loan chukane ki capacity hai” do alag baatein hain. Sirf score ko 750 se 800 karne ke bajay pehle rejection ka actual reason samjhein.

Why was my loan rejected even with a 750 or 800 CIBIL score?

Think of a loan application as three separate questions: how have you handled credit, can the proposed repayment fit your present finances, and does your application meet this product’s requirements? A strong answer to the first does not settle the other two.

Your credit record

Read account status and payment history, not only the score.

Your present finances

Compare documented income with existing and proposed repayments.

The lender’s criteria

Check the specific product, documents and application details.

CIBIL’s loan-approval explanation identifies income/employment, account details, repayment history and existing EMIs alongside the score. It also says criteria vary by lender and loan type. Therefore, “750 is enough everywhere” is an unreliable rule.

Good CIBIL score, rejected application: questions worth checking
What you noticedWhat may need investigationUseful question for the lender
Salary looks sufficientExisting obligations or the requested amount may affect eligibility.Which income and obligations did you use?
Regular money reaches the accountThe income evidence may not meet this product’s requirements.Which documents are accepted for my employment type?
An old loan has been paidIts reported balance, status or payment history may need review. Is an old account affecting the assessment, or is there a reporting error?
Several recent applications failedNew enquiries and the original unresolved issue both deserve attention. Can you explain the eligibility gap before another formal application?
Everything seems correctProduct, employment, location or verification criteria may differ.Which requirement was not met, and can a factual error be reviewed?

This is a way to narrow the question, not a diagnosis or an exhaustive list. ICICI Bank’s published rejection guide also discusses multiple applications, existing debt, income, employment and inconsistent documents. Its explanation does not establish why a different bank rejected you.

I have 750 CIBIL and need a ₹5 lakh loan. Why am I getting rejected?

A ₹5 lakh request is not assessed from your score alone. The repayment amount depends on the tenure and rate, while eligibility depends on the lender’s recognised income, existing obligations and other checks. If you have income arrangements but no formal salaried job, ask which employment category and proof the product accepts.

For perspective, here are two invented reducing-balance loan calculations. Both assume ₹5,00,000 principal, 24 equal monthly instalments, a fixed annual rate divided by 12 and no fees, insurance or taxes. These are not current offers or estimates of your approval odds.

Illustration: ₹5 lakh repaid over two years
Assumed annual rateApproximate monthly EMITotal of modelled instalmentsInterest before fees
12%₹23,536.74₹5,64,881.67₹64,881.67
18%₹24,962.05₹5,99,089.22₹99,089.22

Totals use the unrounded model EMI; displayed EMI is rounded, so multiplying it by 24 can differ by a few paise. A real lender may adjust the final instalment and has its own charges. The practical question is whether this monthly commitment fits documented income after existing EMIs and essential living costs. “I can repay something every month” does not establish that the particular repayment fits.

If several lenders have declined, pause to establish the common gap rather than assuming you need a higher score or one more application. Ask whether the issue is income evidence, obligations, product criteria, verification or a report entry. Our EMI calculator can model different amounts and tenures; a lower instalment can come with more total interest.

I earn ₹50,000 a month. Why is a ₹9,000 EMI still a problem?

The proposed EMI is only one line in your monthly budget. Consider two invented households, both with ₹50,000 take-home income and the same proposed ₹9,000 EMI. The difference is what they already owe.

Illustration: the same salary and new EMI, different existing commitments
Monthly itemHousehold AHousehold B
Take-home income₹50,000₹50,000
Existing loan EMIs₹18,000₹0
Proposed new EMI₹9,000₹9,000
Total EMIs if the new loan starts₹27,000₹9,000
EMIs ÷ stated take-home income54%18%
Income remaining after these EMIs₹23,000₹41,000

Calculation: (₹18,000 + ₹9,000) ÷ ₹50,000 × 100 = 54%. For Household B, ₹9,000 ÷ ₹50,000 × 100 = 18%. The remaining amounts are before rent, food, school fees, insurance, taxes not already deducted and other spending. They are not disposable savings.

This worksheet measures only the EMI share of the stated take-home income. It is not a bank’s official FOIR or debt-to-income calculation, and 54% is not a universal rejection threshold. A lender may recognise income and obligations differently. Ask for its method rather than assuming that being below an internet percentage guarantees approval.

To make your own worksheet, list each existing EMI and the proposed EMI, then separately list essential household costs. Include commitments you actually pay even if they are absent from a summary app. Use our EMI calculator to explore an illustrative repayment and the monthly budget planner to see what remains. A smaller EMI created by a longer tenure can also mean more total interest; it is not automatically the better loan.

My CIBIL is good, but I am self-employed or have no salary slip. Can I get a loan?

A salary slip is evidence for salaried work; it is not evidence every borrower can provide. Ask whether the lender has a product for your actual employment category and which income records it accepts. Do not put yourself in a salaried category just to make an online form progress.

For example, imagine a freelancer receives ₹80,000 in one month, ₹10,000 in the next and ₹30,000 in the third. The three-month average is ₹40,000, but that arithmetic does not prove the bank will recognise ₹40,000 as eligible monthly income. Transfers can also include amounts that are not earnings. A useful question is: “Which period and documents will you use to assess sustainable income?”

Prepare the documents the lender requests for your category and explain inconsistent entries truthfully. Do not buy edited statements, inflated salary slips or a promised approval. If a product requires an employment profile you do not have, improving your score alone will not change that requirement. Ask about eligibility before authorising another formal application.

I paid or settled an old loan. Why am I still getting rejected?

First separate three things: whether money was paid, what the lender agreed that payment would achieve, and what the credit report now says. A payment receipt or NOC answers only part of that investigation. Check the account’s balance, overdue amount, status and repayment entries against the lender’s written records.

A loan settled for less than the amount contractually due is different from one fully repaid and closed. Our settled versus closed guide explains the distinction. Do not assume another payment automatically changes the status: obtain the lender’s written account-specific explanation first.

If an entry is factually wrong, keep the supporting evidence and raise it with the reporting lender and bureau using the credit-report dispute process. If the history is accurate, asking to erase it is different from correcting an error. No agent can legitimately promise a clean report or a fixed score increase just because you pay a fee.

CIBIL’s rejections and disputes FAQ says it does not maintain a “defaulters list”; lending decisions belong to the credit institution. “My name is blacklisted by CIBIL” is therefore not a precise explanation to act on.

Does a rejected loan application reduce my CIBIL score?

Separate the decision from the enquiry. Applying can lead to a lender enquiry; receiving a rejection does not mean you missed a repayment on a loan that was never granted. Review the Enquiries section and existing accounts instead of assuming the rejection message itself is an overdue-payment entry.

Multiple applications can create multiple lender enquiries and may raise concerns in underwriting. There is no reliable fixed points deduction for each rejection that we can calculate for you. Checking your own report is also different from authorising a lender’s credit enquiry; see does checking CIBIL reduce it?.

If an enquiry is unfamiliar, first identify the lender and the application or platform it relates to; then dispute a genuinely unauthorised or inaccurate entry. Do not dispute a genuine application simply because it failed. Check what a marketplace proposes to submit before consenting to it.

What exactly should I ask the bank after rejection?

A specific clarification request is more useful than “my score is good, please approve”. You can adapt the following for the lender’s official support channel:

My application [reference] was declined on [date]. Please share the reason or reason category available for this decision. Was the issue related to income/obligations, product eligibility, verification, documentation or credit-report information? If a factual mismatch can be corrected, please identify the record and evidence required. Please confirm whether reviewing the correction requires a new application or credit enquiry.

Keep the reply and original application details. A lender may not disclose its entire scoring model, but you can still seek clarification about a missing document or factual mismatch. An unresolved reporting complaint and a request to overturn a lending decision are different matters.

Before reapplying, write down what changed: a corrected record, verified income evidence, a product eligibility clarification or a repayment commitment that has actually ended. Merely trying the same details on another app does not resolve an identified problem. There is no universal three-month or six-month waiting period that guarantees the next application will pass.

Other questions people ask after a good-score rejection

Will increasing my CIBIL score from 750 to 800 solve it?

Only if the score was the relevant gap, and even then approval is not assured. An income, document or product mismatch needs its own resolution. Ask which issue applies before buying a score-improvement service.

Which bank will definitely approve me with 750 CIBIL?

No bank can responsibly be described as a guaranteed approval based on that number alone. Compare actual eligibility, cost and terms with your circumstances; a promise made before verification deserves scrutiny.

Should I take a small loan just to build a better profile?

Taking unnecessary debt adds repayment obligations and costs. It is not a required response to a rejection. Investigate the actual reason and maintain genuine existing commitments instead.

I have no active loans and no late payments. Why was I rejected?

No existing EMI removes one obligation; it does not establish recognised income or fulfil every product requirement. Ask about verification and eligibility, and read the full report rather than assuming one missing risk makes approval automatic.
